Descent of the Holy Ghost

Oil on canvas 400 x 247 cm. ≈ 1575.

The large altar pall with the portrait of the donor, a wealthy plebeian, sailor and merchant, Vice Stjepović Skočibuha (1534 – 1588), is the most important painting that was commissioned in Italy by the people of Dubrovnik in the second half of the 16th century. Some believe that the work is by Giorgio Vasari. However, others hold that it should be attributed to his younger successor, an artist from Tuscany, Santi Di Tito, who was a pupil of Agnola Bronzina (1503 – 1572), the greatest representative of Tuscan mannerism.
